Don't forget about our feather friends during the cold winter months.
The following recipes are easy to prepare and make terrific treats for them.

BIRD MUFFINS

1 cup cornmeal 1 cup bread crumbs, very fine
1/2 tablespoon baking soda
3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup bacon drippings
1/4 teaspoon sand
1 cup water

Combine cornmeal, flour, bread crumbs and baking soda. Add raisins, bacon
drippings, sand and water, mix well. Put mixture in muffin pans and bake at
350 degrees for 15 minutes. Attach to tree branches or put on a bird feeder.

BIRD BALLS

3-1/2 cups oatmeal
l 1 quart water
1 pound lard or suet
1 jar (12 ounces) peanut butter
3-1/2 cups cornmeal
3-1/2 cups cream of wheat Cook oatmeal in water for 2-3 minutes.

Remove from heat; stir in lard or suet and peanut butter until melted.
Add cornmeal and cream of wheat. Cool and then shape into 3 inch balls.
Hang in mesh bags or onion bags and hang from trees.

BIRD MEATBALLS

2 cups bread crumbs
1/2 pound ground suet
3 chopped apples, seed and all
1/2 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 handful nut meats
2 handfuls raisins
8-ounces peanut butter
1 cup wild bird seed
Bacon drippings

Mix all ingredients together; add enough melted bacon drippings to hold
everything together. Shape into balls or press into pine cones
and hang in a tree. Can be frozen for future use.

BIRD OATMEAL CAKES

1/2 cup ground wheat
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 egg
2 Tablespoons molasses
1/2 cup milk
1 Tablespoon cooking oil

Blend together and beat well. Pour into an oiled pie pan and bake at 350
degrees until golden brown. Raisins may be added.
Crumble well when placed on feeder.

RAISIN CAKE FOR THE BIRDS

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 cup flour
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup unsalted fat
1 cup skim milk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Bread crumbs may be added if you want

Mix all ingredients to form a thick batter.
Add raisins dredged in flour. Grease the pan well.
Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour.
Cool and break into bite-sized pieces.
Put in bags to hang from a tree and place on bird feeders.

BIRD KEBOBS

Take 3 to 4 foot lengths of twine and string on pieces of bread,
doughnuts, cornbread, meat scraps, biscuits, apples, oranges, raisins or
any type of dried fruit. Drape over branches of a tree.
Nearly all birds that stop by for a meal or snack will enjoy this treat.
There is something for everyone, the seed eaters, the insect eaters,
and even those that turn up their bill at conventional bird feed.
Try some and see if they aren't a hit in your yard.

BIRD CAKES

One part peanut butter
One part melted suet
Six parts cornmeal

Spoon mixture into muffin tins, when it hardens it
can be frozen until needed.

BIRD CUPCAKES

1 pound of suet cut into small pieces
1 cup chunky peanut butter
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup sunflower seeds

Melt suet, add other ingredients until well blended.
Pour into cupcake pans and chill until hard.

WILD BIRD TREATS

This recipe is a good all-year-round treat.
4 cups cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup shortening

Combine all the ingredients; mix well.
Put it in an onion bag or suet feed,
or pack it in pine cones or into the bark of trees.
Then watch the birds
enjoy this hardy feast.
