In the labor room holding hands, both drenched in sweat,
Through formula, slobber, vaseline, and diapers soaking wet,
Through midnight cries, baby rashes, and foul smelling puke,
Through baby powder, tiny white booties, and "Oh it's so cute",
From Pacifers, bottles, walkers and strollers,
To high chairs, baby cups, first walks, and first words,
YOU WERE THERE
A Band-Aid in hand cleaning scrapes and wounds,
Combating chicken Pox and measles with Chicken Noodle Soup,
Through tricycles, mudpies, tree climbing, and fights,
Through crayons, Barbie Dolls, cars, tea sets, and kites,
Saying, "Don't play with fire or take candy from strangers,"
Warning us to "look both ways before crossing" and of other dangers,
YOU WERE THERE
Waiting with hot chocolate as I play outside in the white snow,
Accepting the same cologne for Christmas three years in a row,
On Mother's Day, some makeshift gift made at the Teacher's guide,
An ashtray, pot holder, or beaded necklace you'd never wear outside,
Losing patience, struggling to help me with my math,
Then smiling with triumph as I ride my bike down the path,'
YOU WERE THERE
Fidgeting Nervously explaining the birds and the bees,
Hugging me, comforting me when I didn't make the team,
Through Make-up experimenting and increasingly bad grades,
Through loud music, moodiness, and rebellious stage,
From Pimples, dances, the first kiss, the first date,
To driving lessons, long telephone calls, and staying out late,
YOU WERE THERE
You were there for me through all the stages of my life,
Teaching me, loving me, showing me the wrong from right,
Now when you look at me, the product
of your LOVE is what you see,
A HANDSOME man, a beautiful woman stands
where your child used to be,
I thank you for the person I've Become
I thank you for all you've done.
Watch me now as I take all I have learned.
And venture out to find a world of my own.
